What it means

Closed-source research obtains targeting information from restricted or paid sources. Investigators may have limited visibility into what was acquired or how.

MITRE ATT&CK catalogs this behavior as T1597, within reconnaissance. The technique describes a behavior; assigning the label does not by itself prove an actor identity or successful compromise.

An investigation example

A targeted approach references nonpublic details whose origin remains uncertain after initial review.

Evidence to examine

Compare known disclosures, authorized data access, message evidence, and any corroborated source relationships.

A common analytical pitfall

Unexpected knowledge does not by itself prove a specific database purchase or internal breach.

Response considerations

Preserve the evidence, assess plausible exposure paths, and state uncertainty about information origin rather than inventing an acquisition story.

Access restrictions do not guarantee trustworthy information

A fictional investigation learns that company details appeared in a paid data service. The fact that access required payment or membership says little about the information's accuracy, age, or provenance. Closed sources can contain legitimate research, stale records, fabricated claims, or unlawfully obtained material. Analysts need to distinguish those possibilities.

Do not assume the organization can observe an adversary's searches. Much preparation happens outside its systems. A defensive assessment may only learn about the resulting information through a later incident or a reliable report. State the visibility limit rather than claiming that no search occurred because no internal alert exists.

Handling exposed secrets requires controlled procedures. Purchasing or downloading sensitive datasets can create legal, privacy, and evidence-handling issues, and is not a beginner research exercise. Use approved threat-intelligence processes and minimize retained personal data. A source mentioning a company name is not automatically proof of a current breach.

Evaluate a fictional intelligence claim

Prepare a synthetic report stating that an old employee list was available in a restricted service. Record the claimed collection date, evidence of authenticity, and whether the listed people still work at the organization. Separate what the report demonstrates from what remains unknown about account compromise.

Then identify a proportionate response: verify relevant accounts, review exposure, or seek additional evidence through authorized channels. Avoid amplifying unsupported claims in a team report. The useful skill is source evaluation under limited visibility. Closed-source searching describes a way an adversary may gather context; it does not make every restricted dataset reliable or every mention of the organization an incident requiring the same response.
