Business impact analysis

Learn what disruption does to the organization and which services matter first.

The idea

A business impact analysis examines the consequences of disrupted activities over time and identifies recovery priorities and dependencies. It considers people, customers, obligations, finances, and operations. Work with service owners rather than guessing criticality from technical complexity. Recovery requirements should reflect what the business needs and what the organization can realistically deliver. The analysis informs continuity and recovery planning.

In practice

A clinic identifies the systems needed for patient intake, the harm of extended disruption, and the manual workarounds possible for a limited period.

A common misunderstanding

The most expensive system is not automatically the most urgent service to recover.

Why analyze impact over time?

Think it through: A short interruption and a multi-day disruption may have very different consequences and recovery requirements.

Ask what interruption does over time

A business impact analysis examines how disruption affects important activities and the resources they need. The same outage can have different consequences after an hour, a day, or a week. Timing matters: an assessment service may be especially important during examinations, while a payroll dependency may become critical near a payment deadline.

Gather information from the people who understand the activity, not only its technical platform. Identify dependencies such as staff, suppliers, identities, data, connectivity, and manual alternatives. Distinguish a service being technically online from the business activity functioning adequately. A restored application that lacks current records may still fail the operational need.

A fictional enrollment interruption

An academy loses access to its enrollment system. For a short period, staff can record inquiries manually. As the outage continues, payment reconciliation and class allocation become difficult. The analysis identifies when the workaround stops being practical and which data must be available to recover the activity reliably.

The resulting priorities should inform continuity and recovery plans. They do not guarantee that the desired recovery time is currently achievable. Compare business needs with demonstrated capability and escalate the gap. An unsupported target written into a plan can create false confidence until an actual disruption exposes it.

Interview a fictional owner

Choose a learning platform and write five questions for its business owner: what activity it supports, who is affected by interruption, how harm changes with time, which dependencies matter, and what workaround exists. Then distinguish an impact statement from a technical failure cause. This keeps the analysis focused on consequences and priorities rather than only listing possible outages.
